Registering for WRT 490 for Summer Internship

The Writing Department does not offer WRT 490 in the spring/summer semester, but students who have summer internships are encouraged to take WRT 490 in the following fall semester to reflect on their work experiences and develop skills for future job search.

For a student who would like to have a summer internship and take a 3-credit WRT 490 in the following fall semester, below is what you need to do.

At the end of the winter semester:

  • 1. Contact the internship coordinator to get approval for WRT 490 in the fall semester.
  • 2. Complete paperwork to get a course permit to register for WRT 490 (detailed procedures can be found in the internship guide):
    • a. Obtaining an official statement signed by your onsite supervisor that describes your internship
    • b . Filling out a GVSU Internship Agreement Form from Career Services that documents the internship.
  • 3. Get an “internship homework package” from the internship coordinator. This package consists of guidelines for a weekly journal and an internship portfolio, and reading materials that will better prepare you for the internship and smooth your transition process from school to the workplace.

During your internship in the spring/summer semester:

1. Do the readings.
2. Keep a weekly journal of your internship experience.
3. Collect work artifacts and portfolio items for your internship portfolio.

In the fall semester:

1. Submit your internship journal to the internship coordinator at the beginning of the semester.
2. Come to attend the WRT 490 class!
