New Work...Finally
So this week has been pretty busy for me; I have been assigned new projects. I find out (by overhearing a phone conversation) that the person who does all the press releases, research, and interviews has actually signed with a different company. My supervisor did a lot of complaining and called different people to see who would return him a favor and join the team. At first, I thought this was strange because he could have simply asked me. I just didn't want to be a last resort. But as a business, and how things change so often in the schools, he would need someone who could just write the releases without having to be taught and someone who was there full-time, not two days out of the week.
Eventually, I was asked to write two press releases. The first release was a who, what, where, when layout and it was about a recycling company partnering with one of the schools to build a recycling barn (for the school to use as a recycling distribution). The second release was to promote the famous authors Ada Flor and Isabel Campoy (Spanish children's book writers) to come to the schools and give lectures as well as an open presentation to family and students. This was he first celebration in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. I had a few corrections to make for the revisions, so I probably went back and changed things about 5 times. My supervisor wanted me to get a feel of the style.
Overall, I think this was a great opportunity for me. It is an inconvenience for my department to have a writer quit; however, my supervisor must trust my skills now and rely on me. This gives me the chance to actually show him that I can work under pressure and that I can handle learning new things. Once I learn the GRPS style for press releases, I will be able to add my own style and not feel restricted to imitate other releases. However, I do know a place where I need to work on when writing these press releases, the damn titles. I love to create titles for poetry and that's usually one of things people always appreciate with my work; however, I can never create media attention title. I will just have to work on that.
