My Designated Task: Press Releases
Well, this week has been pretty much the same as the previous weeks. My supervisor gives me three (no more than four a day) press releases to write and I write. One press release was about a 1986 GRPS alumni and Broadway "Rent" star returns to Grand Rapids to help one of the elementary schools (that I attended) sing in a choral company. The other press releases congratulated City High School for receiving one of the highest honors in the National Forensic League: the Leading Chapter Award and the last press release announced the 18th Annual JROTC Drill Meet hosted by Centrtal High School.
These were all interesting topics; however, I enjoyed writing about the 5K "Turkey Trot" the most. For starters, the name itself is great. The 5K Turkey Trot is a 5K run or walk race held at Calvin College and opened to the public. So if you're reading this and love to participate in races, you can register online at www.classicrace.com. The race starts at 8:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day and there is an awards ceremony that follows. The neat thing bout this race is that all the funds (early registration is $20 and late registration is $25) collected goes to the GRPS Athletic Department. This helps the student athletes participate in sports competitions without having to pay. After finishing the press release, I had to create a flyer for the event.
On Friday, I actually did some editing. Lately, it's been me writing information and revising my own work. This was task was exciting because I was able to review a grant. I didn't find out until after the grant was submitted that it was worth $10 million dollars. That's huge! The problem with the grant was that it was too long. Information needed to be cut or combined somehow and I was supposed to look for areas that sounded redundant. I thought it would be quite difficult because I didn't understand everything that was being discussed in the grant; however, the language was very friendly. It was almost too friendly as the style has colloquial speech and cliche phrases. However, I'm not sure if this is good or bad. I'll let you know if the grant was approved.
