I am pleased to announce... my supervisor is quite understanding.
I only work at my internship Wednesdays and Fridays from 12-5 p.m. , and I wish my schedule would allow me to be there everyday. I finally realized that I really enjoy being there and that I can actually miss doing the work. Within the last two weeks, I have had to miss two days of work. I went in on Wednesday not being able to speak (sore throat); however, I wanted to show my supervisor that I am dedicated. Now this to a school district is a "no no." Everyone hates for a sick person to come into the building and spread germs. Good thing I have my own cubicle in the middle of an area by myself. When my boss finally came back into the office and realize I was sick he gave me the choice to go home right away or stay and work. I thought this could have been a test, so I chose to stay. I really wasn't feeling well but since I am not able to be there on Mondays and Tuesdays, I can only imagine how much work piles up. That day I had to write two press releases and whenever I finished, I could go home.
I had to miss that Friday and the next Wednesday because I was still miserably sick (there is a doctor's note). All I had to do was email my supervisor and he responded friendly by telling me to stay inside and get better. Now this made me question why he was so understanding. Is it because I am just an unpaid intern or just because school districts are strict on illness? Or maybe it's both.
Well I did feel better by Friday to come into work and surprisingly, I was given a new task. I had to go to Covell Elementary School take pictures and interview the principal and two students (a 3rd and 5th grader) about the event. To raise money for Scholastic Books, the students voted for the principal to have her office in a tent for the day (the option that received the most money won). Sounds fun, well when it's not cold, rainy, and cold. As excited as I was to go to the school, I knew I would get sick again as it was pouring outside. The interview was a success, the students were great, pictures turned out nice, and I got some great quotes for the press release (although, I didn't have to write this one).
