Future Work with Public School Administration
I was having trouble thinking about something to write (since I have been done with the internship since late August) so I pulled out the handy sheet with journal ideas. I will be answering the question "has this experience made you think about possible careers in this field?"
I think I would be open to a future career within the administration of public schools. While there were some stressful points about the internship, overall it was a success. I enjoyed the work and think I would enjoy learning even more about how any district ran. I have always seen education as an extremely important matter, but I have never truly wanted to be a teacher. I think I could enjoy teaching at the collegiate level, but I'm not sure I have the patience to deal with 12th grade or below. Working in the administrative offices of a school district would be a good way for me to use my skills and knowledge to help promote learning and education via the smooth operation, promotion, and success of a school, instead of as a teacher.
Also, since my mother has worked in such a setting for many years now, I can see personal benefits to such a career as well. I know for a fact that Cedar Springs Public Schools have always been very understanding and flexible about being able to leave early or take a day off for a child being sick, doctors appointments, field trips, sporting events, etc. They value parental involvement in their students lives, and therefore they are more than open to the parents that work for them being involved. I'm not sure if all districts are like this, but I would imagine that due to the nature of the place of employment it is likely. And while I don't have any kids right now, my husband and I do intend to have a family in the future. It would be great to find a company to work for who was open to such things.
