Doing my own thing
Let me start by first giving a short synopsis of what exactly it is I’m going to be doing for my internship over the next few weeks. I’m interning at the Do Something Guide, a GVSU publication aimed at students new to the university, whether they be freshmen or transfer students. My work is going to be primarily concerned with writing articles that would be of interest to transfer students, and to offer a viewpoint that leans more towards the academic, rather than the extracurricular.
Outside of my initial interview and some scheduling calls, I haven’t had any interaction with my supervisor. My assignment until my next meeting with them later today is to essentially edit and update the entire magazine and to come up with a few article ideas. Mostly what this has consisted of is scribbling an idea or two for an article on a notepad in between updating things such as operational hours for locations and what resources are available to students.
If there’s anything I’ve learned from the past week and a half, it’s that editing work is tedious work. From my experience so far I’m also going to be allowed a lot more independence than I was expecting, although I’ll see if that changes in the weeks to come when things start to ramp up. Overall it’s been a positive experience to this point, and it’ll be interesting to see what I learn in the weeks ahead.
