Begining: The Learning Curve

My beginning week in my internship consisted mostly of writing the application for my summer scholars project. This was important because I will be working closely with my coordinator over the summer and I’m particularly glad I have found a multidisciplinary position that allows me to incorporate my writing and my skills with my minor (history). This week, I’ve spent it looking over oral history books. There is a great deal of information to consider when interviewing someone about their life. I suspect the hardest thing will be picking a focus when I begin drafting. I expect I will have a learning curve when it comes to meeting her high expectations.

Although I have previous interview experience, I have never done much in-depth interviewing.
Over the next week or so my goals is to make head way with transcribing previous interviews my boss has recorded. I will continue to work on improving my interviewing skills. I’m particularly excited to start interviewing women. There is a 93 year old woman who probably will provide valuable insight into major events over the past century. Over the course of the semester, I hope to produce an article to submit to several history based magazines in Michigan. My biggest concern right now is keeping up with the reading and continuing the transcriptions. I also have a follow up interview to conduct that my boss began the previous semester. So far, I don’t think I’ve ever be bored during this internship.
