About my internship
Since this is my first blog entry, I’ll describe a little bit about my internship. I am interning with the KEEP Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises money for scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to KEEP Foundation members to pay off their student loans after they graduate. Membership is free, but helping out at fund-raising events throughout the year is required of members.
My primary job is writing grant proposals for KEEP. I also do other writing related tasks. Some of the things I have done so far include sending press releases to all the college newspapers in Michigan, writing for the KEEP Foundation blog, and composing letters and e-mails to KEEP members from the organization.
I like that there is a variety of things for me to work on that all require a different writing style. For example, the writing style I use for writing a grant proposal is quite different than what I use for the blog posts. I think I would get bored if I had to write similarly for everything.
Another interesting thing about my internship is that the majority of it is done at home. Therefore, a lot of my communication with my supervisor is via e-mail. On that note, I’m glad a lot of my courses emphasized proper communication through e-mail. I don’t want to say “Technology is changing the workforce.” We know that! But I’m glad I’m in school now -- if I’d received my degree a few years back, I might not have learned so much about e-mail communication.
